Below you'll find three reasons why light pollution is an issue that needs to be addressed.

WHAT WE'VE LEARNED

HURTS OUR SLEEP

Any amount of light leaking into your bedroom at night can disrupt a person's sleep and leave them waking up tired. This is due to visible light's ability to suppress the production of melatonin, a neurotransmitter that helps people feel tired and have productive sleep.

DISRUPTS NATURE

Many of nature's animals who rely on the day/night cycle to operate can be easily confused by the vast amounts of lights coming from our cities. According to Dark Sky, these unnatural lights disrupt animals' behaviors like "reproduction, nourishment, sleep and protection from predators."

COVERS THE STARS

The vast quantity of light emitted can cover up the stars for those living in or near big cities. The artificial light from our cities brightens our night sky and makes it practically impossible for many people to see the stars. The blanket of orange hides the stars from our sight.
